The First Political Parties in New Zealand edit

Before the formation of political parties in New Zealand, MPs were all independent, although nearing the end of the nineteenth century, they had grouped themselves into two loose factions, liberalism and conservatism.

The liberalist group were the first to unite and form the Liberal Party in the 1890s, which began its rule as the Government in 1891.
