- The first meters appeared in the early 1950s.
- All stamps are inscribed “SIERRA LEONE” in the frank.
- They are grouped according to the political situation at time of issue:
- A - During period of British Protectorate
- B - Since independence in 1961
GROUP A: Issues of the British Protectorate, with crown and “EIIR” logo, and denominated in £sd edit
A1. Universal “MultiValue” (MV), 1950s. 
[Quite scarce, but value uncertain]
- Upright frank with simulated-perforation outer frame line and straight inner frame line.
- Inner box around value figures with crown over “EIIR” and rays at bottom.
- “POST” reading up in panel at left, and “PAID” reading down in panel at right.
- M# with “U” prefix in boxes in lower corners.

A2. Pitney Bowes “Simplex” (LV-25). [$50]
- Frank similar to Type A1 but smaller.
- Wide spacing between TM and frank.
- “POST PAID” in arc above value figure.

A3. Pitney Bowes “Simplex” (LV-25). [Quite scarce. Value uncertain]
- As Type A2 but with small crown beneath country name at top and dash in panel at bottom center.
- M# with “S” prefix in boxes in lower corners.

A4. Neopost “Frankmaster” (MV). [$20]
- Large frank as Type A1 but with small crown over “EIIR” at bottom.
- Very small “POST PAID” above country name at top.
- M# with “RN” prefix in boxes in lower corners.

GROUP B: Issues since independence in 1961, without logo of the British monarch, denominated in cents edit
- Some meters with unaltered stamps from the pre-independence period continued to be used after 1961.
- Political and social turbulence starting in the early 1990s appear to have eliminated the use of postage meters. Inflation has also rendered the Cent obsolete. Any new meter stamps that may appear would probably be denominated in ‘leones’.
B1. Pitney Bowes “Simplex” (LV-25). [$50]
- As Type A2 but without British monarch logo at top and with “CENTS” below value figures.
