Malawi edit

  • The first meter was installed in 1951 during the period of British administration. In 1953 the British merged the territory of Nyasaland with Northern and Southern Rhodesia into the FEDERATION OF RHODESIA & NYASALAND. In 1963 the Federation dissolved. Nyasaland became independent and a year later changed its name to Malawi.
  • The stamps are divided into three groups:
A - NYASALAND from 1951 to 1953, before the Federation
B - NYASALAND after the Federation
C – MALAWI

A1. Universal "Multi-Value" (MV), 1951.  [$75]

Upright frank with simulated perforation outer border and straight line inner border except at bottom.
Country name in panel at top.
Crown at bottom flanked by “U” at left and "1" at right. One meter only.

NOTE: This stamp was used again after formation of the Federation in 1963. Examples used in the 1960s are rarer than those dated 1951-1953.

Lion in center beneath crown.
Value at bottom flanked by "N" at left and "1" at right. One meter only.

This is RHODESIA & NYASALAND Type 2C with “RHODESIA / AND” removed from the top panel.
Meter number ”SU 508” known. Others may exist.

This is RHODESIA & NYASALAND Type 4 with “RHODESIA AND” removed.

Similar to Type C4 but with straight-line outer border and country name in panel at top.
Rooster and sun logo at bottom flanked by "N" at left and meter number at right.

Similar to Type C5 but double outer frame line and without inner panel lines.
Meter number with “N” or “RN” prefix.

The rising sun logo at bottom does not appear to contain a rooster.
