The nut-liketubers of certain sed-ges of this genus areedible, and the rootsof a few species arefragrant and aromatic, v /^ yielding agreeable perfumes. Our common species grow in clumps, mostfrequently in moist places, and bloom duringmidsummer and later. The stems are leafyat the base and are triangular. The flowersare borne in spikelets which are usually flatand linear and are clustered on branches atthe summit of the stems. A conspicuousterminal flowering-head is thus formed, ofwhich a distinguishing feature is the presenceof one, several, or many leaves surroundingthe base of the flower-cluster.
