Summary

Description

Active wetland management on Lacreek National Wildlife Refuge. Wetlands that remain flooded year round for decades will decline in productivity over time. Nutrients become tied up in accumulated material under the water. Drying the wetlands out exposes the material to oxygen, increasing decomposition rates. Properly timed drying will also allow the seeds of many desireable species of wetland plants to germinate in the shallow water and mudflats that are exposed during the growing season. Species such as annual smartweed (Polygonum lapathifolium) and rough barnyard grass (Echinochloa muricata) in the photo have germinated and are producing a huge amount of seed that will be available to waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wildlife when shallowly flooded again. As an added bonus, these plants support aquatic invertebrates which are very important for nesting waterfowl and their young ducklings. Active management of these wetlands with mnagement capabilities helps to maximize the available habitat.
