Summary

Description
English: The rugosans are an extinct group of corals - they range from the Ordovician to the Permian. They were solitary or colonial and made a hard, calcareous skeleton. Each corallite has radial symmetry. Stereotypical solitary rugose corals have a horn shape and are nicknamed "horn corals". When seen from the cup end, the solitary rugose corals have a rounded cross-section. Seen here is a bizarre type of solitary rugose coral called a calceoloid that does not have a round-shaped cup. Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Rugosa, Calceolidae
