The Holocaust began, for all practical purposes, with the Wannsee Conference. It was at this conference that the Nazis planned the massive extermination. While Jews were the primary targets, Gypsies, homosexuals and invalids were also targeted. The Nazis would send these so-called untermenschen ("sub-humans") on trains to various concentration camps or (especially in the Soviet Union) would send special commandos called Einsatzgruppen to assassinate them.
