Sport Innovation/Skins Sportswear/Background, Current situation and SWOT
Background of the organization
SKINS Compression Garments Pty Limited, headquartered in Riverwood, Australia, was incorporated in 2004, although the idea behind the current technology dates back to 1996. The creator, an Australian skier, had a sports science background and was ambitious to practice sport with the same intensity as when he was younger, while still keeping the same level of freshness. His main idea was that increased blood circulation helps the body perform better. With the usage of the “second skin” and wrapping his muscles into it, he could accelerate blood flow and increase oxygen delivery to working muscles. Consequently, this would improve power, speed, stamina and recovery.
The invention process and design of the first pair of SKINS tights took 5 years. Since then the use of SKINS amongst athletes picked up rapidly and still remains extremely popular. As a matter of fact, SKINS are nowadays a highly sought-after product by discerning sports people in more than 30 countries.
Use of SKINS generates a number of benefits for athletes, what has been highlighted by many studies published in peer reviewed medical journals. SKINS are designed to increase the flow of oxygen to muscles and there are two key ways to achieve this: by gradient compression and superior construction.

Compression garments can be used in different sports and can be suitable for professional athletes as well as for amateurs. The trend of compression garments could turn out to be only a big hype with new future perspective. All kinds of media can be used to improve publishing and marketing of compression garments. Sponsored athletes could increase the media interest on SKINS’ compression garments. The market for recreational athletes and „weekend athletes“ could be a potential new customer group. Using Internet and interactive media can increase the customer relationship between SKINS and its clients base.
