Amyloidosis


  • Characterized by deposition of insoluble protein fibers in tissues, leading to tissue dysfunction
  • Usually a systemic disease with widespread protein deposition, although rare localized forms exist


Tracheobronchial Amyloidosis

  • Mayo Clinic; 2007 (1999-2004) PMID 17625086 -- "External beam radiation therapy for tracheobronchial amyloidosis." (Neben-Wittich MA, Chest. 2007 Jul;132(1):262-7.)
    • Retrospective. 7 patients with tracheobronchial amyloidosis. EBRT 20/10 to trachea starting just below vocal cords to both mainstem bronchi, 1.5 cm radial margin. Median F/U 3.3 years
    • Outcome: Subjective improvement 100%. Time-to-improvement 1 month - 1 year. Recurrence in 1 patient after 17 months
    • Toxicity: Grade 2 esophagits 1 patient, Grade 2 pneumonitis 1 patient
    • Conclusion: EBRT safe and can provide symptomatic improvement
