ਨਾਂਵ (Noun) edit

ਨਾਂਵ (Noun) is a word used to identify a person, a place, a thing or even an abstract idea. It may be used for a specified individual entity or a group or a class of such entities. In this section we shall examine the form of the noun of various classes and how nouns of a particular class are formed from the basic noun form. Let's first take the gender of a noun. We start with ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ (masculine noun) and see how ਇਸਤਰੀ ਲਿੰਗ (feminine noun) is derived from it. We shall also see how the number of the noun in both genders affects the noun form.

ਸਧਾਰਨ ਨਾਂਵ (regular nouns) edit

A large number of masculine nouns end with kanna (ਆ). We classify such nouns as regular masculine nouns or ਸਧਾਰਨ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ. ਘੋੜਾ(horse), ਬੋਤਾ (camel) and ਸੋਟਾ (stick) are examples of regular masculine nouns. The reader would have noted that even though stick is a non living thing still ਸੋਟਾ is masculine in Punjabi. The gender of such words is determined by the word form rather than by the gender of what it represents. Regular masculine nouns are governed by the following general rules. Rule 1 : The feminine (ਇਸਤਰੀ ਲਿੰਗ ) form of ਸਧਾਰਨ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ or regular masculine nouns is obtained by changing ਆ to ਈ.

  1. ਘੋੜਾ - ਘੋੜੀ
  2. ਬੋਤਾ - ਬੋਤੀ
  3. ਸੋਟਾ - ਸੋਟੀ

Rule 2 : The plural (ਬਹੁ ਵਚਨ) form of ਸਧਾਰਨ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ or regular masculine nouns is obtained by replacing ਆ with ਏ

  1. ਘੋੜਾ - ਘੋੜੇ
  2. ਬੋਤਾ - ਬੋਤੇ
  3. ਸੋਟਾ - ਸੋਟੇ

Rule 3 : However when the regular masculine noun is followed by a postposition the above plural form becomes singular and the plural is formed by replacing ਆ with ਇਆਂ. For example

Rule 4 : The plural (ਬਹੁ ਵਚਨ) form of the feminine (ਇਸਤਰੀ ਲਿੰਗ ) form of ਸਧਾਰਨ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ or regular masculine nouns is obtained by adding ਆਂ to the feminine form.

  1. ਘੋੜਾ - ਘੋੜੀ - ਘੋੜੀਆਂ
  2. ਬੋਤਾ - ਬੋਤੀ - ਬੋਤੀਆਂ
  3. ਸੋਟਾ - ਸੋਟੀ - ਸੋਟੀਆਂ

ਅਸਧਾਰਨ ਨਾਂਵ (irregular nouns) edit

Masculine nouns which don't end with kanna (ਆ) are classified as irregular masculine nouns or ਅਸਧਾਰਨ ਪੁਲਿੰਗ ਨਾਂਵ. Irregular masculine nouns are not governed by any uniform rule. Still the following general rules cover a large portion of irregular masculine nouns.
Rule 5 : The feminine form of the irregular masculine nouns ending with ਈ such as ਸਾਥੀ is obtained by replacing ਈ with ਅਣ or ਅਨ.

  1. ਧੋਬੀ - ਧੋਬਣ
  2. ਮਰਾਸੀ - ਮਰਾਸਣ
  3. ਖਿਡਾਰੀ - ਖਿਡਾਰਨ
  4. ਪਟਵਾਰੀ - ਪਟਵਾਰਨ

Rule 6 : The feminine form of some irregular masculine nouns ending without vowel such as ਕਬੂਤਰ is obtained by adding ਈ to it.

  1. ਕਬੂਤਰ - ਕਬੂਤਰੀ
  2. ਕੁੱਕੜ - ਕੁੱਕੜੀ
  3. ਦੇਵ - ਦੇਵੀ
  4. ਪੁਤਰ - ਪੁਤਰੀ

Rule 7 : The feminine form of some irregular masculine nouns ending with ਰ such as ਸਰਦਾਰ is obtained by adding ਨੀ to it.

  1. ਸਰਦਾਰ - ਸਰਦਾਰਨੀ
  2. ਲੰਬੜਦਾਰ - ਲੰਬੜਦਾਰਨੀ
  3. ਸ਼ੇਰ - ਸ਼ੇਰਨੀ
  4. ਮੋਰ - ਮੋਰਨੀ

Rule 8 : The feminine form of some irregular masculine nouns is obtained by adding ਣੀ to it.

  1. ਊਠ - ਊਠਣੀ
  2. ਸੱਪ - ਸੱਪਣੀ
  3. ਸਾਧ - ਸਾਧਣੀ
  4. ਮਹੰਤ - ਮਹੰਤਣੀ

Rule 9 : The feminine form of some irregular masculine nouns is obtained by adding ਆਣੀ to it.

  1. ਜੇਠ - ਜੇਠਾਣੀ
  2. ਪੰਡਤ - ਪੰਡਤਾਣੀ
  3. ਨੌਕਰ - ਨੌਕਰਾਣੀ
  4. ਸੇਠ - ਸੇਠਾਣੀ

The above are some examples in which derivatives obtained by change of gender follow certain rules. However not all such derivatives follow definite rules. This feature is not unique to Punjabi and such exceptions are found in almost all modern languages. It takes lots of practice to master the language and such exceptions are the root cause of such difficulty. In a way this is also the beauty of the language. We are providing here some examples in which none of the above rules are applicable to derivatives obtained by change in gender. Many such examples are found in nouns representing human relationships.

  1. ਪੁਤਰ - ਧੀ
  2. ਜੀਜਾ - ਸਾਲੀ
  3. ਪਿਉ - ਮਾਂ
  4. ਮੁੰਡਾ - ਕੁੜੀ

We shall next examine how derivatives are formed to obtain plural of irregular masculine and feminine nouns.
Rule 10 : The plural forms are obtained by adding ਆਂ to the masculine nouns.

  1. ਹੱਥ - ਹੱਥਾਂ
  2. ਆਦਮੀ - ਆਦਮੀਆਂ
  3. ਵਪਾਰੀ - ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ
  4. ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ - ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮਾਂ

However there are exceptions to the above general rule. In the following sentences ਹੱਥ, ਆਦਮੀ, ਵਪਾਰੀ and ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ have been used as plural forms of these nouns even though we have seen above these are singular forms.

ਮੇਰੇ ਹਥ ਰੁਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। - ਸਾਰੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ। - ਦੋਨੋ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਚਲਾਕ ਸਨ। - ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ ਹੜਤਾਲ ਤੇ ਸਨ।

Now compare these with the following sentences:

Here regular plural forms ਹੱਥਾਂ, ਆਦਮੀਆਂ, ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮਾਂ have been used. The reason for such differential treatment is that in the second case each of the nouns is followed by a postposition while this is not so in the first case. It thus follows:
Rule 11 : The singular form when not followed by a postposition, singular form when followed by a postposition and plural form when not followed by a postposition are the same. The plural form when followed by a postposition is obtained by adding ਆਂ to the noun.

Table of declensions edit

We have examined above some rules that the nouns follow when assuming different cases as well as number and gender. We now present a complete table of declensions of the noun ਮੁੰਡਾ (boy) and its feminine form ਕੁੜੀ (girl).

A notable feature of the above case forms is that all of them are formed by adding additional words following the noun except the subject case which does not take any additional words. However there is one notable exception in the case of vocative case where the additional words ਵੇ, ਨੀ, ਏ and ਓ precede the noun instead of following it.
