This Wikibook is divided into modules. Here is brief description of the modules:
Writing System : GurmukhiEdit
This is a basic module and must be learnt thoroughly before you can expect to understand any further modules or lessons. This module consists of eleven lessons. The first ten of these are devoted to introducing the alphabets of the Gurmukhi script and the matras which represent the vowels of Punjabi and the diacritics which are some special symbols. We have delibrately avoided including the punctuation marks and the numerals as they are almost the same as the English ones. The teaching of the script has been made language independent. As a consequence you need not have any previous knowledge or experience of Punjabi to learn these lessons. Care has been been taken to introduce the alphabets in a logical way and with minimal use letters which are not introduced uptil that lesson. You are expected to go through a lot of practising of the illustrative examples used in the text of the lessons.
Writing System : ShahmukhiEdit
This is an alternative writing system used mainly in Pakistan. You are required to learn only one writing system unless you yourself decide to learn both.
This module is specially designed to make you comfortable with Punjabi speech. Muharni literally means a speaking practice excercise. You can play the sound files and follow speaking the words of Muharni.
You can also visit www.muharni.com to learn what each characters look like as well how sound is made by placing your mouse over each muharni characters.
This module conatins about 500 words and seeks to teach you selected Punjabi vocabulary in common use. The purpose of this lesson is to equip you to undertake reading exercises with ease. Some preliminary grammar concepts like number, gender etc. will be taught with the help of these words. Before you can hope to learn these lessons you must be thorough with the Gurmukhi script.
This module is the most important module and intends to equip you with the skill of using Punjabi language as an effective means of communication. A very important feature of this module, when it is complete, will be its complete lack of dependence on a formal knowledge of vigorous rules of grammar. However an attempt has been made to make you aware of the rules of grammar by their actual usage in common conversation. The exercises have been based on the situations that you face in your day to day life. This serves the twin purpose of making you proficient in communication as also to make the learning process both easy and interesting.
This is a special Appendix for those who wish to use their knowledge of Phonetics in leaning the Punjabi phonology.
This module is an advanced topic and is not required to be formally learnt. Its best use lies in frequent references by the learner. However once you have mastered other modules and you are prepared to put in some more effort, a thorough learning of this module will most likely help you have a deeper understanding of the language.
Dictionary of Punjabi UsageEdit
