The sheet bend is a bend knot that is identical in structure to the bowline but is tied differently and has a different purpose, serving as a bend knot instead of as a loop knot. Making reference to the picture to the right, the bigger or less flexible rope should be the red one, and the other rope should be the green one. Notice that, in order to be most secure, the two free ends should end up on the same side of the knot (see below).

Double sheet bend edit
If the ropes used in a sheet bend are of greatly different sizes, it may be necessary to put the smaller one under itself twice (first at the bottom of the bight, second nearer the tip) instead of only once. The resulting knot is called a double sheet bend.
