Edward Gustavus Campbell Barton

Edward Gustavus Campbell Barton was a prominent electrical engineer based in Brisbane, Queensland. He placed Brisbane and much of Queensland at the forefront of public use of electricity, especially in respect of street lighting. He was a founding member of the pre-WW1 Wireless Institute of Queensland and the post WW1 Queensland Wireless Institute. His wireless experiments in the late 1890s and early 1900s pre-dated the monopoly of the Commonwealth Postmaster-General's Department and the issuing of callsigns, but were conducted from Brisbane, Queensland, primarily in the context of popular lectures for the Brisbane Central Technical College. Despite his involvement with early amateur radio clubs he does not appear to have been active as a wireless operator post 1910, perhaps more to his powerful oratory and organisational skills.
