Gesprek 4A-1 edit

De bushalte

Bert loopt naar een bushalte en ziet daar een andere reiziger staan.

Dag, mevrouw, weet u soms wanneer de bus komt?
Ja meneer, welke bus bedoelt u? Lijn twaalf of lijn vijf?
O, dat weet ik niet. Ik moet naar Spijkenisse. Welke bus moet ik dan hebben?
Dan maakt het niet uit. Ze stoppen daar allebei.
Lijn twaalf komt pas over een half uur, maar lijn vijf zou hier over drie minuten moeten zijn
Mooi zo. Weet u hoe lang het rijden is?
Ik denk een kwartier. Niet veel langer. O, kijk, daar komt de bus al aan!
Dank u wel, hoor.
Graag gedaan en nog een goede reis!

Translation • Lesson 4A • De bushalte

Bert walks up to a bus stop and sees another traveler standing there

Hallo, ma'am, would you know when the bus is coming?
Yes sir, which bus do you mean? Number twelve or number five?
Oh, I don't know, I need to go to Spijkenisse. Which bus should I take then?
Then it does not matter. Both of them stop there. Number twelve only comes in half an hour, bu number five should be here in three minutes.
Oh, good! Do you know how long the trip takes?
I think a quarter of an hour. Not much longer. Oh, look there it comes!
Thanks very much
It was a pleasure and have a good trip!

Exercise 4A-2: Plurals edit

Lesson 4 talked about plurals and demonstratives. Here is an exercise involving -you guessed it- fruits:

YOUR TURN - UW BEURT!! • Lesson 4A • Demonstratives and plurals
For the following fruits give the Dutch plural with a proximal demonstrative ("these")
aardbei
appel
peer
kiwi
banaan
bosbes
braam
avocado
walnoot
SOLUTION • Dutch/Lesson 4A • Demonstratives and plurals
deze aardbeien
deze appels
deze peren
deze kiwi's
deze bananen
deze bosbessen
deze bramen
deze avocado's
deze walnoten
Notice that the only ones that take -s are the ones on -el and on a vowel
Notice that the double vowels disappear braam -> bramen to keep the vowel the same.
Likewise the s of bes -> is doubled to keep it a covered vowel
In the plural the proximal demonstrative is always deze

Exercise 4A-3 edit

With your growing vocabulary you should have little problem translating the following story

YOUR TURN - UW BEURT!! • Lesson 4A • Translate the story

Het spijt me". De fietser zegt "Dat is niet erg. Hartelijk dank en tot ziens" en rijdt naar de brug.

De man gaat naar het restaurant en gaat op het terras zitten. Er staan bruine stoelen en op de tafels staan rode tulpen. Een meisje komt naar buiten en zegt: "Goedemiddag meneer, wilt u iets eten? Wilt u de menukaart?" De man zeg: "Goedemiddag! Ik wil liever iets drinken in deze hitte. Geef mij maar een biertje"

SOLUTION • Dutch/Lesson 4A • Translate the story

The doors open, the man steps out and the doors close again. The man wants to go to a restaurant on the side of the street, but another man on bicycle stops and says "Excuse me sir; I ma lookin for the bell tower. Do you know where it is standing? The man says:"No, I have no idea. I am sorry". The bicyclist says: "That's no problem, thank you very much and good bye" and he rids to the bridge.

The man goes to the restaurant and sits down on the terrace. There are brown chairs standing and there are red tulips on the table. A girl come outside and says: "Good afternoon, sir, would you like something to eat? Would you like a menu. The man says: "Good afternoon. I would rather drink something in this heat.
