Yoruba yam porridge, also known as asaro, is a native food eaten in western Nigeria. It consists of primarily of yam, peppers, meat, and vegetables. It contains dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

  1. Place the yam and sliced onions in a pot, and cover with water.
  2. Cover the pot, and boil until the yam is soft.
  3. Stir in the ground crayfish, dryfish, tomato paste, and ground pepper.
  4. Season with salt and seasoning cubes.
  5. Stir in palm oil. Cover and let simmer for about 5–7 minutes.
  6. Remove from the heat, and smash the components to your preference.
