d5! simultaneously defends the e4-knight and attacks the c4-bishop. However, instead of retreating, White may try the move Bxd5! with hopes of Qxd5 Nc3! attacking the pinned knight on e4 and the queen, and cannot be captured as dxc3?? Qxd5! wins the queen.
A rarer followup is Nc3!! with the intention of dxc3 Bxd5! winning the knight on e4.
