Receive the American Red Cross Level VII Advanced Skills or YMCA certificate or equivalent in Advanced Swimming OR pass the following requirements.:Edit

While it is not required that you have a professional teach you (or your kids) to swim, it is highly advisable. Check with your local pool (a local college, or YMCA for example) to see what kind of swimming courses are offered. If you are unsure where your nearest American Red Cross (ARC), or YMCA is, then check online at: Red Cross (in the middle near the top there is a place to enter your zip code so that you can locate your locale ARC chapter); or YMCA (there is a box off to the left that will allow you to enter your zip code). If you choose to not have a professional teach you, you will find the requirements below.

1. Swim a coordinated and effective stroke continuously for the following strokes and distances:Edit

a. Elementary backstroke for 50 yards (45.7 meters)Edit

b. Breastroke for 100 yards (91.4 meters)Edit

c. Inverted breaststroke for 50 yards (45.7 meters)Edit

d. Sidestroke for 100 yards 91.4 meters)Edit

e. Overarm sidestroke for 100 yards (91.4 meters)Edit

f. Tudgen stroke for 50 yards (45.7 meters)Edit

g. Back crawl for 100 yards (91.4 meters)Edit

h. Crawl for 100 yards (91.4 meters)Edit

2. Do the following dives in good form:Edit

a. Standing front diveEdit

b. Running front diveEdit

c. Pike surface diveEdit

d. Tuck surface diveEdit

3. Do a survival float for ten minutes while fully clothed .Edit

4. Do a survival stroke for ten minutes while fully clothed.Edit

5. Do a surface dive and swim underwater for ten yards.Edit

6. Swim continuously for 30 minutes using one or more styles of swimming. Hanging onto the sides (resting) or touching the bottom with the feet is not permitted.Edit

7. Know the causes and prevention of accidents that can occur in or near the water.Edit
